With the price for a single ticket potentially costing $2,500 to $5,000 for Super Bowl LI, trivago.com has some good news for NFL fans still hoping to head to Houston for the big game - it's still possible to get an affordable hotel!

As seen in the chart below, trivago's exclusive Hotel Price Index data shows hotel rates in Houston average $326/night over Super Bowl weekend. The night before kick-off is unsurprisingly the most expensive at $379/night for a standard double room.

Super Bowl Nightly Rate Week Before
Nightly Rate % Increase
Feb 3 $313 Jan 27 $118 165%
Feb 4 $379 Jan 28 $121 213%
Feb 5 $343 Jan 29 $161 113%

How do Houston hotel rates compare to recent Super Bowl accommodation prices? $379/night may not sound like a bargain, but after analyzing Super Bowl hotel rates from Phoenix in 2015 and Santa Clara in 2016, Houston is the indisputable affordability winner, with rooms costing an average $177/night less than Santa Clara (Super Bowl '15) and $57/night less than Phoenix (Super Bowl '16).

Houston (2017) Santa Clara (2016) Phoenix (2015)
$326/night $503/night $383/night

In general, Houston is a budget-friendly city when it comes to attending major sporting events, as demonstrated by average hotel rates for events held in the city recently.

  • 2016 March Madness Final Four: $164/night (avg)
  • 2016 Houston Rodeo: $152/night (avg)
  • 2017 Houston Marathon: $133/night (avg)

According to Jon Eichelberger, Regional Head, Americas for trivago: 'Because Houston has so many hotels, the city is better equipped to handle large inflows of people, as opposed to smaller cities with fewer rooms available. Historically, we see smaller rate increases for cities with a lot of hotels versus those with fewer, even when they host an event as large as the Super Bowl.'

While hotel rates may be less expensive thanks to a large supply of rooms, the expected 140,000-plus out-of-town fanswill still pay a premium for booking nearby NRG Stadium.

As of January 25, there were some 70 hotels with rooms still available on trivago within 10 miles of NRG Stadium. That number drops to around 20 hotels for those hoping to stay within 5 miles of the game. And prices, as expected, are much higher the closer you get to the action.
