Stora Enso will be the presenting sponsor of the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti, which takes place 22 February - 5 March 2017.

'We are honoured to have a role in a major international sports event in the same year that Finland celebrates 100 years of independence. Given our roots in the Nordic forests where cross country skiing takes place, Lahti2017 is a great match for Stora Enso. Additionally, we aim to contribute to making the championships in Lahti a sustainable event with our renewable materials for packaging, biomaterials, wood products and paper,' says Karl-Henrik Sundström, CEO of Stora Enso.

Several buildings at Lahti2017 feature wood products from Stora Enso: the countdown clock, the main entrance gate, two shelters in the stadium and the wooden terraces in the fan zone. The podium at the medal plaza will be built of wood too. Other Stora Enso products include the cups and plates with board from Stora Enso Consumer Board, waste bins from Stora Enso Packaging Solutions and book, leaflets and office paper from Stora Enso Paper.

In an online survey, Finns, Swedes and Germans were asked about how responsibility and use of renewable materials at a spectator event would affect their event experience. Over one thousand between the ages of 18 - 80-year-old responded in each country, and samples were representative by gender and region. Among the results: Over half say they would be willing to pay more for an event, if they believe it is 100% sustainable.

Stora Enso believes that sporting events can be arranged in a 100% environmentally sustainable manner over and over again, and that this will be a key element of the sports experience already in the near future. Events have made a good start by increasing recycling. A turning point will also be using renewable materials to begin with. Everything that is made from fossils-based materials today, can be made from a tree tomorrow.

Welcome to Lahti2017! Stora Enso looks forward to demonstrating what a tree can do, while cheering the athletes in action.
