Sony Corporation will release a 4k (Ultra HD) camcorder for consumer use within 2013. The company exhibited a mock-up of the camcorder at the 2013 International CES. It employed the 'XAVC' file format, which uses MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 level 5.2 as a codec.

Its coding rate (bit rate) has not been decided yet. Though the camcorder is designed for consumer use, Sony expects that professional users who cannot spend much money on video shooting equipment will purchase it. The new camcorder is integrated with a lens.

Its longest focal distance is 400mm (35mm film equivalent), and its widest field of view is relatively wide. It supports power zoom (motorized zoom). The size of its image sensor is not APS-C. Its recording medium has not been decided yet, and Sony might use a medium other than commercial memory cards.

The development of the XAVC standard is led by Sony. Its major specifications are the number of pixels per frame: 4K (4,096 x 2,160, 3,840 x 2,160), the number of bits per color: 12, 10, 8, Frame rate: up to 60fps, Color sampling: 4:4:4, 4:2:2, 4:2:0, Container (wrapping) format: MXF (Material eXchange Format).
