Market Review

Growth stocks led gains as interest rate worries ease

Big tech and growth stocks spearheaded gains in equity market today as recent signs of a cooling labor market supported bets of a slower pace of interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve and buoyed hopes of a soft landing for the U.S. economy. Money market bets now show 79% odds of a 25-basis point hike in the Fed's February policy meeting, with the terminal rate expected at 4.92% by June. The upbeat market sentiment was also helped today by China reopening its borders on Sunday which bolstered the outlook for the global economy and stoked hopes of a demand recovery for crude oil and other resources. On the corporate side, Apple Inc, Alphabet Inc and Microsoft Corp gained over 2% each as U.S. Treasury yields declined. Amazon.com Inc rose more than 3% after comments mentioning that cost pressures are easing for the e-commerce giant in the second half of the year. Tesla Inc climbed as much as 7% intraday after the electric-vehicle maker indicated longer waiting times for some versions of the Model Y in China, signaling the recent price cuts could be stoking demand. U.S.- listed shares of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd rose almost 4% on news that Ant Group's founder Jack Ma will give up control of the Chinese fintech giant in an overhaul. In Canada, the main stock index also gained today, tracking the upbeat sentiment in global markets. Economic data showed, the value of Canadian building permits rose by a 14.1% in November from October. The residential sector saw higher intentions for both the single-family and multi- family components, while both the industrial and institutional components were up in the non-residential sector. The value of building permits was up in seven provinces, with Ontario recording the largest increase. Among stock news, financial services firm Canaccord Genuity Group Inc soared more than 28% after a group led by the company's management said it would launch a takeover bid at nearly C$1.13 billion. Nuvei Corp has agreed to buy Paya Holdings Inc in a deal valuing its smaller peer at $1.3 billion and would boost the Canadian payments firm's operations in the United States.
