Retail sales spiked this holiday season, increasing 11% compared to 2019's holiday season, according to a Mastercard report.

Store sales increased 8.1% and e-commerce sales were even higher at 11%, according to a New York Times report.

The report, Mastercard SpendingPulse, also revealed online sales accounted for 20.9% of all retail sales this year.

"Shoppers were eager to secure their gifts ahead of the retail rush," Steve Sadove, senior adviser for Mastercard, said in a statement regarding the report's findings. "With conversations surrounding supply chain and labor supply issues sending consumers online and to stores in droves."
