Lufthansa will impose additional environmental surcharges on flights from Europe from next year.

The environmental surcharge of up to 72 euros per ticket will apply to all flights marketed and operated by the Lufthansa Group departing from the 27 EU countries as well as the UK, Norway and Switzerland. "The surcharge is intended to cover part of the constantly rising additional costs due to regulatory environmental requirements," said the airline on Tuesday, explaining the move. The climate protection requirements in the EU require billions in investments, and Lufthansa cannot bear the costs alone. The amount of the surcharge will vary between one and 72 euros per flight, depending on the route and fare.

The environmental surcharge will be levied for all tickets issued from June 26 for departures from January 1, 2025. Lufthansa will display the exact amount of the surcharge on the booking pages in the price details. So far, Lufthansa has only offered a voluntary option to pay a contribution to climate protection with the "Green Fares". However, only four percent of customers make use of this.
