The Indian region is the most important market for the company as many Swiss tourists would like to visit warm parts of this region, CEO Baurs Company Rolf Blaser said on Sunday.

'Sri Lanka is the most sought after tourist destination for Swiss tourists and since commencing operations in 2018 all our flights have been full. It is one of the best destinations we started last year. We also try to attract tourists to visit Switzerland one of the most important tourist destination in the world,' he told an event titled 'Edelweiss Business Talk-2020' at the Hilton Hotel Colombo. Baurs is the local agent for Edelweiss Air.

He said the strategy of Edelweiss Air is to fly to most popular destinations in the world by taking many Swiss passengers with them. 'We are all over the continent except Australia and we fly to North American destinations and are in the process of building up destinations in South America. We offer perfect airline connections to the capitals of the world from Zurich. All the Edelweiss aircrafts are newly refurbished ones that offer excellent cuisine to its passengers,' he said.

Edelweiss is Switzerland's leading leisure travel airline that flies to 72 destinations in 32 countries the world with its fleet of 16 aircraft. Every year more than 2.7 million passengers fly with Edelweiss.

Andreas Meiser, Head of Corporate Communications Department of Edelweiss in Zurich, said that Edelweiss flights to Sri Lanka from Zurich commenced one year ago in 2018 with two flights a week during the winter season. Edelweiss is part of the Lufthansa group based in Germany, a sister company of Swiss International Air Lines.

Meanwhile Edelweiss pilot Laurent Bobay has been privately involved with the 'Friends Lanka Child Foundation' for several years. His sister in law helped build up this organisation and has lived in Sri Lanka for many years.

At the end of 2018 the project for the renovation of the 'Frangipani Early Childhood Development Center Seenimodara' was officially submitted to Edelweiss. The kindergarten is a project of the Friends Lanka Child Foundation to provide better living conditions to access education for a brighter future of the under privileged children and to their families regardless of their religion or ethnic background.
