RESTON, Va, Jan. 14, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Leidos [NYSE: LDOS], a national security, health and engineering solutions company, continued its support of The Children's Inn at NIH with its second $100,000 donation in 2013 to assist The Inn's Park and Playground.

The Children's Inn at NIH is a residential "place like home" for more than 1,500 seriously ill children and their families annually. Children come from across the country and around the world to stay together with their families free of charge while being treated at the world's leading biomedical research centers.

"We are tremendously grateful to Leidos for their continued commitment, both financially and through all the ways they make life easier for our families," said The Inn's Chief Executive Officer, Kathy L. Russell.

In addition to the recent donation, Leidos provided 25 gift cards to families staying at The Inn during the holidays. "We understand the stress that the families endure while their children are getting treatment at the Clinical Center, and it's especially difficult during the holidays," said Steve Comber, president of Leidos Health. "The gift cards were given to offset a small part of that stress."

The relationship between Leidos and The Children's Inn dates back to 2011. Leidos employees contribute to special projects, such as their active involvement with the construction of the Inn's Park and Playground, which opened in 2013. The park and playground offers children of all ages - and grown-ups, too - a place to relax and recharge after medical treatments. A few of the park's features were created after receiving design tips from the children.

"Our relationship with The Inn is a natural and successful fit," Comber continued. "Our scientists and technical personnel work side-by-side with researchers and program staff at the National Institutes of Health to help discover the causes of and treatments for diseases, such as cancer and AIDS. Our company wants to demonstrate its support financially and our employees want to volunteer and show their appreciation for the amazing work that NIH does every single day."

The donation marks a pledge of continued support from Leidos - nearly $500,000 since 2011 - coupled with ongoing volunteer support from Leidos employees.
