Durham ex-forces man Harry Thorpe is celebrating this month after landing his dream job as a gas engineer. Harry, who served in the 21 Engineer Regiment, was offered the job with plumbing and heating engineers DJ McGough Ltd following a successful work experience placement arranged for him by Gas Training at Kier, based in North Tyneside.

Gas Training at Kier, which is part of Kier North Tyneside, is based at the former British Gas site in Killingworth. It provides training for candidates who want to start a career in gas engineering or renew their qualifications, and has a great track record in helping ex-forces personnel start a career in gas engineering. As part of its training package, Gas Training at Kier offers a guaranteed work experience placement, which is how Harry came to the attention of the team at DJ McGough.

Alan Carr, project manager at DJ McGough, said: "Our workforce is the most valuable resource we have and the company believes in the investment and development of all employees. When Harry was on his work experience placement I received very good feedback, so when a job opportunity arose I arranged an interview and was delighted to offer him a full-time position."

Kier regional director, Mike Furze, commented: "Kier North Tyneside is committed to helping people from all backgrounds develop careers in a wide range of trades. Soldiers show a tremendous commitment to our country by putting their lives at risk and we are proud to be able to help them with their future career choices."

Harry said: "When I left the armed forces I wasn't sure where my career would take me. I really wanted to develop a career in gas and my training with Kier and placement with DJ McGough Ltd has helped me learn the skills I need, as well as gain contacts and on the job work experience. I am extremely pleased to have been offered such a fantastic opportunity."

Blaydon-based DJ McGough Ltd is one of Kier's subcontractors on its East Durham Homes contract.
