Emma Walmsley, CEO of GSK, and Professor Ara Darzi, Director of the Fleming Initiative at Imperial College London, discuss the issue of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a global health problem that is receiving insufficient attention. According to Walmsley, AMR causes the deaths of more than one million people every year, a figure that could rise to 10 million by 2050 if appropriate innovations and policies are not developed.

Professor Darzi points out that the misuse and over-consumption of antibiotics has allowed bacteria to develop resistance, which represents a major challenge, including in UK hospitals. He stresses the need to improve the management of prescriptions and to raise public awareness of this issue.

Both experts stress the importance of collaboration between governments, regulatory bodies, the public and healthcare systems to respond effectively to this threat.
