Apple Intelligence will be only sparsely available on Apple devices when it rolls out this fall. Not only because Apple is skipping the EU for now, but also because only iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max will be supported in addition to iPads and Macs with M1.

According to Apple's head of AI, John Giannandrea, the problem is that older neural modules in Apple chips are not powerful enough. While Apple's local language models could theoretically run on older devices, they are actually too slow.

Also, the AI models require enough memory. The standard iPhone 15 models with their old A16 SoC have 6 instead of 8 GB of RAM, and the latter would be the minimum.

The upcoming iPhone 16 models would be compatible with Apple Intelligence by default, though.

Even then, Apple AI will only work with American-English for now.
