STORY: Donald Trump was officially named the Republican presidential nominee on Monday, as the party's national convention kicked off with an abundance of security in the city of Milwaukee, just days after the former president survived an assassination attempt.

Attendees on Monday said the attempt on Trump's life had "energized" his supporters.

PRESIDENT OF A WISCONSIN BUILDING COMPANY AND 2024 REPUBLICAN CONVENTION GUEST, DAVID BELMAN:

"The assassination attempt on Trump has solidified everybody. It's unified the party. It's coalesced around him, in my opinion, and they're energized and ready to reelect him."

TEXAS REAL ESTATE INVESTOR AND RANCHER, 2024 GOP CONVENTION DELEGATE FROM TEXAS, ASHLEY CASH:

"We're thanking God that President Trump, you know, survived the assassination. And I think this is, if this is doing anything, it's really galvanizing everyone behind him,. Not only people who've been supporters for a long time, but people who maybe were on the fence."

Meanwhile, protesters from opposing groups raised their voices a few blocks from the venue, carrying signs including ones that said "Ballots not bullets."

JAY GIBSON, 33, WISCONSIN RESIDENT:

"It's not one issue. There's LGBTQ issues, we have racist issues, we have the genocide happening in Gaza right now. All of these things that will only perpetuate or get worse under GOP leadership."

The RNC comes at a tense moment in U.S. history... which President Joe Biden addressed Sunday night:

BIDEN: "The political rhetoric in this country has gotten very heated. It's time to cool it down."

Some pro-Trump commentators predicted more violence after Saturday's shooting in Pennsylvania.

A senior member of the Proud Boys, the violent all-male extremist group that led the January 6th storming of Congress, said the group would show up at the Republican National Convention, which culminates with a speech by Trump on Thursday.
