SAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ Visa Inc. (V) on Thursday reported fiscal first-quarter profit of $3.96 billion.

The San Francisco-based company said it had net income of $1.83 per share. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, were $1.81 per share.

The results beat Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of 14 analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.69 per share.

The global payments processor posted revenue of $7.06 billion in the period, also topping Street forecasts. Eleven analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $6.77 billion.
