Amcom Software, Inc. today announced that Rockingham Memorial Hospital (RMH) is building on the strength of its Cisco wireless VoIP foundation with Amcom's advanced messaging and quality solutions. RMH, based in Harrisonburg, Va., will address the needs of its mobile staff through Amcom's encrypted smartphone messaging, Web-based directory / on-call scheduling, and emergency notification solutions. The hospital contact center will also use Amcom's call recording solution to improve call center quality, monitor compliance, and evaluate operator training needs. The 238-bed organization chose Amcom in part due to its Cisco integration strategy and for its breadth of products that provide the ability to create a succinct communications flow throughout the hospital.

Using a centralized source of contact and scheduling details that extends out to staff's smartphones running Amcom Mobile Connect will be a key element of this information flow. Amcom Mobile Connect will give RMH staff a method of sending and receiving encrypted, critical communications via a variety of devices. These include Cisco wireless IP phones, as well as iPhone, BlackBerry, and Android smartphones. Staff members will use the software to improve their daily workflows with the ability to use their mobile devices to send secure messages to any other user in the hospital directory. All communications will be logged in an audit trail and guarded with important security elements to help ensure HIPAA and HITECH Act compliance. Among others, these include a password-protected inbox and ability for IT to remotely wipe all messages from a lost or stolen device.

The new Web-based staff directory and on-call scheduling capabilities will enable RMH personnel to access accurate contact information and the latest calendars through an intuitive Web portal. Hospital and practice administrators will also use the Web portal to update on-call schedules in real time, improving the timeliness and accuracy of the contact database. The Amcom emergency notification solution will extend the use of electronic on-call schedules with the ability to send individual or group messages for both patient care and emergency management code calls to any user's preferred device. Staff can then use the mobile device to confirm their availability or escalate to another user, eliminating confusion and speeding the time to rally all necessary staff during time-critical situations.

"We've worked hard to leverage technology to make our facility environmentally and operationally efficient," said Michael Rozmus, Vice President of Information Services, Rockingham Memorial Hospital. "We want to further extend the capabilities of our technical infrastructure to ensure our staff can work even more efficiently. The fusion of Amcom Software and our deployed Cisco solutions will enable us to improve the workflows that matter most to patients and staff."

"We've invested in Amcom for its broad suite of solutions that fits well with the needs and strategies of midsize hospitals like ours," Rozmus continued. "Encrypted smartphone messaging for critical communications was a major part of this investment decision."

"We continue to see hospitals of all sizes leveraging their Cisco platforms in concert with Amcom solutions--with great success," said Chris Heim, President, Amcom Software. "We look forward to our in-depth work with RMH to use our smartphone messaging and other solutions in ways that will bring out the best communication patterns for staff and the best outcomes for patients."
