Uniper supplies 15 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity generated from hydroelectric power to the municipal utilities of the market community of Stockstadt in Bavaria every year.

This amount of electricity is enough to meet the needs of more than 4,000 households. As early as 2018, the municipality decided to supply its customers exclusively with hydroelectric power from sources that are as regional as possible. For the years 2019 to 2023, the municipal council concluded an agreement on the supply of CO2-free electricity from the run-of-river power plants on the river Main. Since then, the contractual partner has been Uniper. The contract between the municipal utilities and the energy supplier has now been extended for another four years: Until the end of 2027, the community will receive climate-neutral electricity from hydropower generated in Bavaria.

'We are very pleased with the extension of the contract. This means that we can guarantee our customers a reliable supply of power until 2027 - climate-neutral and thus forward-looking,' says Mayor Rafael Herbrik. 'We see the supply of electricity from hydropower as an important building block on the way to making our community climate-neutral, true to the motto 'think globally, act locally'. This is how we improve the quality of life in our region. Uniper supports us as a valuable partner. And what's best about this: Thanks to the precise allocation of power plants, we know exactly where our green electricity comes from.'

With a total installed capacity of two gigawatts, Uniper is one of the largest operators of hydroelectric power plants in Germany. At 109 hydroelectric power plants in Germany, the company produces emission-free energy and the run-of-river power plants on the rivers contribute to covering the baseline load around the clock. This also applies to the waterworks on the river Main, from which the market community of Stockstadt obtains its energy.

'Hydropower provides enormous benefits that we want to pass on to our customers: no CO2 emissions, no noise and no exhaust gases. Energy from hydropower is predictable, reliable and controllable. We are delighted that our partnership has been further strengthened by the extension of the contract and that we are supporting Stockstadt on its way to supplying its customers with climate-neutral energy', says Thomas Bordlein, the responsible Key Account Manager at Uniper. 'This is once again confirmation of our commitment to the decarbonization of our electricity generation and storage facilities. Within the next few years, our portfolio will consist mainly of climate-friendly gas-fired power plants and CO2-free hydropower. Entirely in line with our customers' requirements.'

About the Stockstadt municipal utilities

The market community of Stockstadt operates the low-voltage grid in the municipal area under its own management and is the electricity supplier of most of the customers connected it. Income that is generated by this activity benefits the municipal budget. An additional 1.7 million kWh of electricity from renewable energies is generated or fed into the community's power grid from the more than 170 photovoltaic systems and two water mills.
