Sweett Group's rail team were invited by Transport for London (TfL) to a private viewing of their Station Design Idiom in Southwark.

The team were guided through TfL's vision for the design of their stations, which will be implemented on everything from minor refurbishments to brand new stations, including the new Nine Elms station at Battersea.

The exhibition included prototype fit out elements as well as an architectural map of the London Underground, detailing which design styles are present in each station.

The idiom encourages everyone working on TfL's projects to keep in mind the following nine principles:

  • Achieve balance across the network
  • Look beyond the Bostwick gates
  • Consider wholeness
  • Prioritise comfort for staff and customers
  • Delight and surprise
  • Use materials to create atmospheric spaces
  • Create ambience with lighting
  • Integrate products and services
  • Prepare for the future

'It's fantastic that TfL have created a design idiom that allows everyone to understand their vision for the future. This understanding will help our team of consultants to deliver projects that reflect the ambitions of TfL and assist in creating a world-class end user experience. I'd like to extend our thanks to TfL for inviting us to view this exciting exhibition.'
