(Alliance News) - Rio Tinto PLC on Wednesday said Katie Jackson will take charge of the company's copper mines, bringing a wealth of experience across the energy sector.

The London-based miner announced in April that the head of its copper operations, Bold Baatar, will take on the role of chief commercial officer for the full group later this year.

On Wednesday, Rio said it appointed Katie Jackson to succeed Baatar as copper chief executive on September 1.

Jackson is currently employed by National Grid PLC, serving as president of NG Ventures, where she is responsible for the development and operation of large scale infrastructure energy assets.

Chief Executive Jakob Stausholm said: "Katie brings diverse experience from across the energy sector. Her leadership will be invaluable as we shape our copper business for a successful future. As we continue the ramp up of Oyu Tolgoi to become one of the world's largest copper suppliers, we are also looking to the future with new opportunities across the world."

Jackson also held operational and commercial roles at Shell PLC and at BG Group PLC, a gas producer that Shell acquired in 2016.

"It is an exciting time to lead the copper business when we have such a central role to play in delivering a low carbon future and I believe my current role delivering major infrastructure projects will help me bring a new perspective," said Jackson.

Rio Tinto shares were up 0.1% to 5,075.82 pence each in London on Wednesday morning.
