Rio Tinto announces an investment of US$143 million to develop an R&D facility in Western Australia aimed at supporting the decarbonization of the global steel value chain.

RioTinto intends to develop its BioIron low-carbon ironmaking process there, using raw biomass and microwave energy instead of coal to convert Pilbara iron ore into metallic iron used in the steelmaking process.

According to RioTinto, with the use of renewable energies including biomass, the BioIron process has the potential to reduce carbon emissions by up to 95% compared to the current blast furnace method.
