Rio Alto Mining Limited (TSX: RIO; BVL: RIO; NYSE: RIOM; Frankfurt: MS2) is a Canadian based resource company focused on the development of the 21,000 ha La Arena gold / copper project, located in north central Peru, the most prolific gold mining district in the country.

The district is home to a number of world class and medium size gold mines including Barrick Gold's Lagunas Norte Mine, 15 km west of La Arena (2012 production: 754,000 ounces of gold ), Newmont's Yanacocha Mine, 100 km to the north (2012 production: 1.35 million ounces of gold), and 10km to the north of the privately owned La Virgen Mine (2012 production: approx 50,000 ounces of gold).

La Arena contains 5.5 million ounces gold (1.7 million in oxide and 3.8 million in sulphide) and 3.7 billion pounds copper in measured & indicated resources with additional inferred resources of 0.18 million ounces gold and 1.3 billion pounds copper**. First gold production at La Arena occured on May 6, 2011 and 201,113 ounces of gold were poured in 2012.
