Burton based pub company Punch Taverns has kicked off the New Year by handing over a whopping £1,000 for housing and homelessness charity Shelter.

Punch raised the money through its annual Christmas raffle where Punch employees paid £1 a ticket to enter to win a range of gifts that had been donated by suppliers and the money goes towards a good cause.

This was organised by the Punch Community Promise, which involves Punch staff donating time and money to a variety of local causes such as charities, schools, sports clubs, welfare groups and hospitals.

Penny Cooper, area manager for Shelter, said: "We are really grateful to Punch for choosing to donate the money they raised to Shelter. We aim to prevent homelessness for people who may live in poor housing conditions, so we will keep going until everybody has a home. Every two minutes someone in the UK faces losing their home, so this money will go towards the call centres which help alleviate the distress caused by issues such as rent arrears, rogue landlords, house re-possession and poor living conditions.

"With almost seven million people in total relying on credit in some form to help pay their housing costs, we are concerned that the New Year could bring with it a risk of homelessness for people who are struggling with their housing costs."
