ROME, Jan 4 (Reuters) - The Italian government could look at selling down its stakes in postal service Poste Italiane and state rail company Ferrovie dello Stato (FS), Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Thursday.

"My idea is to reduce the presence of the state where this is not necessary and reinforce that state presence where it is needed," Meloni told a news conference.

She cited Poste and also Ferrovie as examples where the state could cut its stake, without giving a time frame.

She cited the goverment's reduction in November of its stake in bank Monte dei Paschi di Siena as a positive sign. (Reporting by Giselda Vagnoni and Giuseppe Fonte Writing by Keith Weir)
