Significantly more new cars were registered in Germany last year. New car registrations rose by 7.3 percent to 2.84 million, as announced by the Federal Motor Transport Authority in Flensburg on Thursday.

A drop of 23 percent in December dampened the positive trend. The German luxury car manufacturers BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche all recorded double-digit growth in 2023. Volkswagen grew by just under eight percent, but remained the best-selling brand with a market share of 18.8 percent. 34.4 (2022: 32.6) percent of new cars had a petrol engine, while the proportion of diesel vehicles shrank to 17.1 (17.8) percent. Hybrid models had a market share of 29.5%, while all-electric cars accounted for 18.4%.
