One million Peugeot and Citroën vehicles feature the eCall emergency call system
PSA Peugeot Citroën continues to lead eCall roll out in
Europe, with Citroën e- Touch and Peugeot Connect. Over one
million Peugeot and Citroën models featuring the emergency
call system have been sold since 2003 and nearly
5,500 people have used it to access emergency services in the
10 European countries where eCall has been deployed.
In 2010, PSA Peugeot Citroën made the eCall emergency call
system widely accessible with the launch of the autonomous
telematics box (ATB). This vehicle-connected on- board unit
separates the telematics systems from other functions, such
as hands-free phone control, offering an independent
communication solution free of contract obligations for the
life of the vehicle.
eCall is also equipped with a location-aware assistance
system that puts vehicle occupants in contact with a roadside
assistance network in the event of a breakdown.
PSA Peugeot Citroën's emergency call system received the Euro
NCAP Advanced award in late 2010 for its cutting-edge safety
features. The only volume carmaker to earn such a
distinction, PSA Peugeot Citroën has once again demonstrated
that vehicle safety is one of its core priorities by offering
innovative, effective safety solutions.
How does it work?
The emergency call system enables motorists to contact a
dedicated assistance centre.
In the event of an accident, a short cell phone message
identifying the vehicle and giving its telephone number and
exact location is sent manually or automatically via GSM to
the
centre (Inter Mutuelles Assistance in France, for example)
that hosts and coordinates the
call reception and processing unit.
An operator calls the drivers back and analyses the
situation, taking into consideration the vehicle's location,
the seriousness of the accident, the number of people injured
and the need for emergency response teams. If necessary, the
operator then transmits this data to the police, emergency
medical teams or other appropriate rescue crews in the area.
If the motorist is unable to answer, the call is
automatically forwarded to the rescue teams.
PSA Peugeot Citroën's emergency call system helps teams reach
the accident scene quickly, thereby helping to reduce the
number of serious road injuries and fatalities.
