The second phase of a £150,000 project to improve the gas supply in Worcester City Centre is due to start next month.  On 13 February engineers will start replacing the old gas mains in Cornmarket with new hard-wearing plastic pipe which will ensure residents and businesses in the area continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply.

The work is expected to be completed by the end of March.  During this time the junction of New Street and Cornmarket will be closed.  Vehicles will be able to drive along New Street from Charles Street but will have to turn around before the Cornmarket junction.  The one way system in New Street will be rescinded temporarily so vehicles can turn around and return to Charles Street.

The first phase of the project took place in 2011 when the old mains running along High Street and Church Street were replaced.

National Grid project manager Mick Brettle said:  "This project is a major investment in the safety and reliability of the town's gas supply.  We have worked closely with Worcestershire County Council, Visit Worcester and local traders while planning the scheme in a bid to reduce the disruption and ensure the safety of pedestrians.  We realise this second phase will cause some inconvenience but I ask the public to bear with us while we carry out this essential job.  The work will be a short term inconvenience for a long term benefit.  Once it's in the ground, the new plastic pipe will last for around 80 years and will need little or no maintenance."

The work will be carried out on behalf of National Grid by Enterprise PLC and is part of the company's 30 year programme to improve the safety and reliability of the gas supply network.
