• Upgrade will keep gas flowing to local homes and businesses for decades

Essential work to keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in Hucknall until the end of the century is due to start next week.

National Grid will be upgrading nearly 500 metres of gas mains in Annesley Road. Work is expected to start on Monday 26 January for 10 weeks. The existing iron mains are being replaced with tough, hardwearing plastic pipes that have a lifespan of at least 80 years.

To carry out the work safely, it will be necessary to use a combination of temporary traffic lights and road closure. For the initial stages of the work the temporary traffic lights will be sited between the junction of Spring Street towards Baker Street in 100 metre sections. The Road closure is not expected to be in place until early March and further details will be provided nearer the time.

National Grid Authorising Engineer Paul Patrick said: "This is essential work which will secure safe and reliable gas supplies for local people for decades to come.

"We will try to minimize any disruption to businesses and residents as much as we can. We have visited affected businesses and we will be providing them with information about our business compensation scheme."
