MYTILINEOS upgrades the Emergency Department of the Livadia General

Hospital's Pediatric Clinic

Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development Initiatives

Athens, Greece - 30 January 2018 - MYTILINEOS is always standing up for the safeguarding of children's rights through socially responsible actions, acknowledges and supports the children's fundamental right to direct access in basic, quality Health Services.

Subsequently and under the new Social Policy guidelines that now reflect the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals, it has started, since the beginning of 2017, a partnership with the "Pediatric Trauma Care" association.

The goal of this partnership is the contribution of MYTILINEOS in creating and upgrading Emergency Departments (EDs) at the Health Centers and Pediatric Hospitals of Greece, primarily to the areas of the local communities in which the company operates, as well as the broader provision of information to parents and teachers about the issue of child injuries.

As part of this partnership, MYTILINEOS announces that it will fully cover the upgrading of the Emergency Department of the Livadia General Hospital Pediatric Clinic with both diagnostic and interventional medical equipment. After the completion of this project, it will be possible for the Hospital to provide immediate response services from the first crucial moments for any child injury, time that is valuable for the outcome of its health. In total, it is estimated that the Emergency Department provides immediate assistance to more than 3,500 children annually, enhancing the health system services in the wider region of Viotia, southern Fthiotida and eastern Fokida.

Apart from the Livadia ED, MYTILINEOS has also contributed to the creation of the Larisa Hospital Emergency Department, aiming to upgrade its equipment, while it has also fully covered the creation of a similar Emergency Department at the Health Center of Hydra island. The aforementioned EDs have already started their operation and, as estimated, provide their services to more than 8,000 children on an annual basis.

Accidents are the leading cause of child death and disability in Greece. According to the relevant data, approximately 500,000 children are injured every year in our country, of which 700 die and 3,000 remain disabled, figures that could have been reduced if immediate treatment at a Pediatric Hospital was available. It is noted that 50% of serious injuries occur in so-called safe spaces (42.5% at home and 10.4% at school), a fact which highlights the constant need to inform parents and teachers on issues pertaining to child injuries.

MYTILINEOS consistently demonstrates its active support of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, and more specifically of the 3rd Goal on "Good Health and Well-Being", through its initiative to contribute to the establishment of a network of fully equipped Emergency Departments (EDs) for Children within Greek Hospitals.

At the same time, the creation of a network of fully equipped Emergency Departments (EDs) for Children in the country's Hospitals and Health Centers constitutes an immediate and pressing need. The Emergency Department (ED) functions as the vital link between pre-hospital and in-hospital care and its key purpose is to provide specialized, immediate and effective medical response to severe incidents and to stabilize the medical condition of injured children that are brought to the hospital.
