Dutch smarthome manufacturer Athom, better known for its Homey platform, has been acquired by LG Electronics. The South Korean tech giant announced this on Wednesday.

This is a partial takeover: the South Koreans are taking over 80 percent of the shares. The remaining 20 percent will follow over the next three years. What LG paid for it was not disclosed.

Athom emphasized that Homey will remain as it is and that new Homey products will be developed as usual. Existing products will also be supported as usual. Founders Emile Nijssen and Stefan Witkamp remain in their posts.

'LG has recently invested heavily in solutions for smart spaces and AI, and we are proud to be part of this innovative, high-performing company,' says Stefan Witkamp.

LG, Samsung's major competitor, intends to integrate Homey into its AI-based LG ThinQ platform for home appliances. This integration should give the Korean tech giant "more comprehensive insights" into its customers' lifestyles.

More than 50,000 devices can currently be connected via Athom's Homey Pro smarthome hubs. The hubs work with various connection technologies, from wifi to bluetooth, Z-Wave, Thread and Zigbee.
