The Jerónimo Martins Group has been included in the Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index for the first time. The 2021 edition of the index, released today, lists a limited group of 380 companies operating in 11 industries and headquartered in 44 countries. In the list of member companies, Jerónimo Martins is the only Portuguese company from its business sector, which is only represented by 25 companies from across the globe.

For Susana Correia de Campos, Head of Corporate Employee Relations of the Jerónimo Martins Group, 'our debut in this prestigious index is another milestone and a positive nod for the work we have done to promote gender equality that we are very pleased to acknowledge and that we face with great responsibility. We are an international Group that employees over 115,000 people in three countries and that is proud to say it has 67% of women in management positions'.

The Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index's methodology includes two weighting factors: 30% for 'disclosure' and 70% for 'data excellence'. For these two factors, the Group obtained an overall score of 65%, mainly as a result of its 98% for the 'disclosure' component, and 80% for 'equal pay & gender pay parity' and its 'sexual harassment policies', two of the five dimensions assessed under the 'data excellence' component. The index assesses over 100 indicators in total.

The road travelled in 2020 towards gender equality

As part of the Group's efforts to ensure equality and non-discrimination, and in accordance with Portuguese law, in 2020 Jerónimo Martins published its 2020-21 Gender Pay Plan.

Also in the year, the Jerónimo Martins Group joined Target Gender Equality, a programme designed for the members of the UN Global Compact aimed at accelerating gender equality in companies. The goal of the programme is to set ambitious targets for women's representation and leadership in all levels and in all areas of business, aligning the companies committed to Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5) of the 2030 UN Agenda - 'achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls'.

Under this initiative, the Group carried out an internal gender equality diagnosis using the Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs) Gender Gap Analysis tool. This exercise was essential to identifying strengths and the areas with opportunity for progression within the Group for women's empowerment.

Gender quality is in the Jerónimo Martins Group's DNA and part of its daily operations

Women have a predominant role in the management and decision-making positions in the Group's operations in Portugal. On Pingo Doce's current Executive Committee, 50% of the members are women with very diverse responsibilities and functions, such as general manager, operations director, finance director, human resources director or marketing director. Women also make up 50% of Recheio's Executive Committee.

The Jerónimo Martins Group employs more than 115,000 people in the three countries where it pursues its business: Portugal, Poland and Colombia. In all, women represent 76% of the workforce and 67% of management positions.
