IBERDROLA invested €550 million in extending and improving its electricity grid in Spain in 2011. Specifically, the company has commissioned 32 new substations, increased the capacity of another 51 facilities and constructed almost 3,000 km of high, medium and low voltage lines and approximately 1,900 transformer centres.

The construction of these new installations, together with the upgrade of some existing facilities, enabled IBERDROLA to add around 3,300 megavolt amperes (MVA) to the system in 2011, thereby increasing its installed capacity by 5.2%.

38% of the total investment made (€218 million) was allocated to the construction of substations; 39% (€223 million) was earmarked for power lines; 6% (€36 million) was used to install new transformer centres; 7% (€43 million) for automating new grid infrastructure and the remaining 9% (€52 million) corresponded to investment in auxiliary resources, general services and metering.

IBERDROLA has constructed nine new substations in the Castilla-León region, totalling a capacity of 230 MVA. Most notably, the Bachilleres facility (50 MVA) in Ávila. Furthermore, almost 200 transformer centres and some 450 km of power lines have also been commissioned in this region.

In Madrid, capacity has been increased by 1,400 MVA through eight new substations, 238 transformer centres and 354 km of power lines. The most important new substations to start operating in the region are the Fuencarral (550 MVA) and El Pilar (425 MVA) facilities, both of which are compact and located within the city.

The new facilities in the Valencia region, contributing a further 445 MVA, include four substations, almost 600 transformer centres and 582 km of power lines. Highlights include the Beniferri facility in the city of Valencia.

In Murcia, three substations contributing 190 MVA to the system have been added, in addition to 243 transformer centres and almost 360 km of power lines. These include the Hípica, Archena and Puerto Errado facilities.

In La Rioja, the company has commissioned three substations (notably the Haro facility) totalling 124 MVA. 92 transformer centres and around 50 km of power lines have also been added.

In Castilla-La Mancha and Extremadura IBERDROLA has extended and improved several substations. In the first region, 207 new facilities and 330 km of line were built, including the Huelves substation in Cuenca, and the Jadraque substation Guadalajara. In the second region, 110 new transformer centres and 172 km of line were constructed, in addition to the Ceclavín substation in Cáceres.

In the Basque Country, the company has upgraded several substations, starting up 132 new transformer centres and 142 km of power lines. Lastly, IBERDROLA has installed 89 centres and an additional 173 km of power line in Navarre, inaugurating the Zizur Mayor and Zidacos substations, with a total additional capacity of 65 MVA.

Key facilities for the system

The purpose of electricity substations is to transform energy from high to medium voltage before it reaches the consumer. This energy is then distributed to the transformer stations that directly supply homes. The power lines transmit and distribute the energy from the different facilities, connecting them to one another to form an extensive distribution grid.

They play a key role in the electricity system and continued investment is required to create a major distribution grid to meet rising demand and enhance supply quality.
