Heartland Express, Inc. reported unaudited consolidated earnings results for the fourth quarter and year ended December 31, 2015. For the quarter, the company reported operating revenue of $174,605,000 against $202,997,000 a year ago. Operating income was $27,719,000 against $34,247,000 a year ago. Income before income taxes was $27,772,000 against $34,216,000 a year ago. Net income was $17,015,000 against $21,544,000 a year ago. Basic and diluted earnings per share were $0.20 against $0.25 a year ago. Operating revenues decreased 6.2% excluding the impact of fuel surcharge revenues. The decrease in operating income period over period was largely due to a decrease in operating revenues, excluding fuel surcharge.
For the year, the company reported operating revenue of $736,345,000 against $871,355,000 a year ago. Operating income was $116,580,000 against $131,868,000 a year ago. Income before income taxes was $116,771,000 against $131,617,000 a year ago. Net income was $73,056,000 against $84,834,000 a year ago. Basic and diluted earnings per share were $0.84 against $0.96 a year ago. Operating revenues decreased 8.0%, excluding the impact of fuel surcharge revenues. Operating income for the twelve month period was positively impacted by a $19.7 million decrease in net fuel expense.
Heartland Express, Inc. is a holding company. The Company, together with its subsidiaries, is a short, medium and long-haul truckload carrier and transportation services provider. It primarily provides a nationwide asset-based dry van truckload service for various shippers across the United States, along with cross-border freight and other transportation services offered through third party partnerships in Mexico. The Companyâs primary customers include retailers, manufacturers and parcel carriers. Its over-the-road tractors are equipped with mobile communication systems. It operates 31 terminal facilities throughout the contiguous United States and one in Mexico.
