PRESS RELEASE: TRADING ON WSE MARKETS

  • The total value of trading in equities on the Main Market was PLN 19.2 billion in December 2013, an increase of 19.2% YoY.
  • The total annual value of trading in equities on the Main Market was PLN 256.2 billion in 2013 an increase of 26.2% YoY.
  • The total value of trading on NewConnect was PLN 153.5 million in December 2013, an increase of 69.0% YoY.
  • The total annual volume of trading in derivative instruments was 12.6 million instruments in 2013, an increase of 11.4% YoY.
  • The total annual value of trading in bonds on Catalyst increased by 43.3% YoY from PLN 3.0 billion in 2012 to PLN 4.3 billion in 2013.
  • The total volume of transactions in electricity reached 176.8 TWh in 2013, an increase of 26.9% YoY.

Equities Market 1)

Main Market
The value of session trading in equities on the Main Market was PLN 16.5 billion in December 2013, an increase of 14.3% year on year compared to PLN 14.5 billion in December 2012. The average value of trading per session increased by 7.9% year on year to PLN 917.8 million in December 2013.
The total value of trading in equities on the Main Market was PLN 19.2 billion in December 2013, an increase of 19.2% year on year. The total annual turnover was PLN 256.2 billion in 2013, an increase of 26.2% year on year.
The WIG index gained 8.1% and the WIG30 index lost 1.8% in 2013.

NewConnect
The total value of trading on NewConnect increased by 69.0% year on year from PLN 90.9 million in December 2012 to PLN 153.5 million in December 2013. The total annual value of trading on NewConnect was PLN 1.2 billion in 2013, a decrease of 6.0% year on year compared to PLN 1.3 billion in 2012.
The NCIndex gained 10.0% in 2013.

Derivative Instruments Market 2)

Futures contracts: The monthly volume of trading in index futures was 880.3 thousand contracts in December 2013, an increase of 11.8% compared to 787.5 thousand contracts in December 2012. The number of open interest in index futures increased by 7.2% year on year to 96.9 thousand at the end of December 2013. The total annual volume of trading in index futures was 8.3 million contracts in 2013, a decrease of 8.3% compared to 9.1 million contracts in 2012.

The volume of trading in single-stock futures decreased by 10.5% year on year (from 47.7 thousand contracts in December 2012 to 42.7 thousand contracts in December 2013). The total annual volume increased by 13.6% year on year in 2013 (from 540.3 thousand contracts in 2012 to 613.6 thousand contracts in 2013). The volume of trading in currency futures increased the most dynamically to 137.4 thousand contracts in December 2013, an increase of 27.1% year on year.

The volume of trading in futures contracts on interest rates (Treasury bonds and WIBOR rates) was 407 contracts in aggregate in December 2013. The total volume of trading in interest rate contracts from their introduction to trading in October 2013 was 2.9 thousand contracts.

Options: The volume of trading in WIG20 index options was 69.3 thousand in December 2013, a decrease of 11.9% year on year compared to 78.6 thousand options in December 2012. However, the total annual volume of trading in options increased by 13.0% from 715.4 thousand options in 2012 to 808.4 thousand options in 2013.

The total annual volume of trading in derivative instruments was 12.6 million instruments in 2013, an increase of 11.4% year on year compared to 11.3 million instruments in 2012.

Debt Instruments Market

Catalyst
The value of listed series (corporate, municipal and mortgage bonds) stood at PLN 59.0 billion at the end of December 2013 compared to PLN 52.4 billion in December 2012 (an increase of 12.6%). The monthly value of total trading increased by 12.4% from PLN 249.1 million in December 2012 to PLN 280.0 million in December 2013.
The total annual value of trading in bonds increased by 43.3% year on year in 2013 from PLN 3.0 billion in 2012 to PLN 4.3 billion in 2013.

Treasury BondSpot Poland
The value of cash transactions on Treasury BondSpot Poland decreased by 36.1% year on year to PLN 14.5 billion in December 2013. The value of conditional transactions decreased by 7.0% from PLN 30.8 billion in December 2012 to PLN 28.7 billion in December 2013.
The total annual value of cash transactions was PLN 346.7 billion in 2013 (a decrease of 22.9% year on year) and the total annual value of conditional transactions was PLN 498.2 billion (a decrease of 18.6% year on year).

Structured Products, ETFs and Investment Certificates Market

Structured products and investment certificates: The aggregate monthly value of trading in structured products and investment certificates increased by 23.7% from PLN 22.8 million in December 2012 to PLN 28.2 million in December 2013. The total annual value of trading was PLN 334.0 million in 2013.
ETFs: The value of trading in ETFs increased by 1.8% year on year in December 2013 from PLN 10.1 million in December 2012 to PLN 10.3 million in December 2013.

Commodity Market 3)

Electricity: The volume of forward transactions on the electricity market reached 12.9 TWh in December 2013, a decrease of 52.3% year on year. The monthly volume of spot transactions in electricity increased from 2.0 TWh in December 2012 to 2.2 TWh in December 2013 (by 6.0%).
The total annual volume of trading in electricity was 176.8 TWh in 2013, an increase of 26.9% year on year.
Property rights: The monthly volume of trading in property rights decreased by 64.8% year on year from 8.5 TWh in December 2012 to 3.0 TWh in December 2013. The annual volume of trading in property rights was 39.3 TWh in 2013, a decrease of 36.9% compared to 62.2 TWh in 2012.
Natural gas: The total volume of trading on the gas market was 934.6 GWh in December 2013 (62.6 GWh of spot transactions and 872.0 GWh of forward transactions). The total annual volume of trading in natural gas was 2.4 TWh in 2013.

WSE held 17 trading sessions in December 2013, the same as in December 2012.
