A conventional Knockout mouse defines a constitutive biological model in which a target gene is permanently disrupted or inactivated in every cell of the target organism. Gene inactivation is achieved at all stages of development, from the 1-cell embryo stage through adulthood.
+ | The generation of a constitutive Knockout model is a fast and cost-effective solution for the preliminary study of target gene function in vivo. | |
- | The constitutive Knockout of a target gene may be embryonic lethal and is likely to result in the deregulation or misregulation of the expression of other genes. A conditional Knockout (e.g. a tissue specific KO or an inducible deletion of the target gene) or the "Safe KO™ technology" may serve to bypass the difficulties of a constitutive Knockout. |
