(Alliance News) - Fincantieri Spa and Viking announced Friday that they have signed contracts to build two cruise ships.

The ships will be based on the characteristics of previous ships already built by Fincantieri for this shipowner and will be delivered between 2028 and 2029. The value of the deal has been described as "large."

The new ships will be built in compliance with the latest environmental standards and shipping regulations and will be equipped with the most advanced safety systems. They will be positioned in the small cruise ship segment, with a gross tonnage of about 54,300 tons, and will accommodate 998 passengers on board in 499 cabins.

Pierroberto Folgier, chief executive officer and general manager of Fincantieri, said, "This contract further consolidates our relationship with Viking and confirms Fincantieri as a partner of choice for shipowners who want to build ships that can use both today's and tomorrow's energy sources."

"Together, Fincantieri and Viking are charting the shipbuilding industry's path toward the goal of zero emissions. With the new order, Fincantieri consolidates its order book, we are a partner of excellence and long term in the cruise industry, as expressed in our industrial plan 2023-2027."

Fincantieri's stock is down 2.3 percent at EUR4.95 per share.
