GUNDREMMINGEN (dpa-AFX) - The interim nuclear waste storage facilities in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg have so far been spared flood damage. The interim storage facility in Gundremmingen, Swabia, which is only a few hundred meters away from the Danube, has also not been flooded so far, BGZ Gesellschaft für Zwischenlagerung announced on Wednesday. Neighboring areas were flooded in Gundremmingen as well as in Biblis in the north of Baden-Württemberg. However, the safety of the interim storage facilities is guaranteed.

This also applies to the five other interim nuclear waste storage facilities in southern Germany, BGZ announced. However, the flooding situation there has been less dramatic so far. Protection against flooding had been taken into account when selecting the sites./fjm/DP/stw
