Peru announced that it has signed contracts with EnerSur and Samay I for the companies to construct two 500MW natural gas/diesel fired plants in the country's south as part of the Nodo Energético del Sur project. Samay I will build the Arequipa region's Mollendo plant at the price of USD 6,899/MW/month and EnerSur will construct the Ilo plant in Moquegua at USD 5,750/MW/month. Peru expects Mollendo to come online in May 2016 and Ilo in March 2017.

The plants will burn diesel initially and then change to natural gas from the Gasoducto Sur Peruano southern gas pipeline project. Plant operators have committed to connect each power plant to state oil company Petroperú's fuel terminal in Mollendo and the future fuel terminal in Ilo. Operators must also provide B5 diesel tanks to meet the power supply of 15 calendar days with a full energy load.

In the second stage, the companies are expected to connect each power plant to the Gasoducto pipeline for natural gas supplies and to connect each thermoelectric plant to Peru's national electric grid through a 500kV transmission line.
