The Supervisory Board has appointed the long-standing Erste Group Bank manager Bernd Spalt to this position, the bank announced on Monday. He will take over from Chief Risk Officer Marcus Chromik in January 2024, who will leave at the end of 2023 as announced. Spalt's appointment is still subject to the approval of the supervisory authority. There had been problems with the previous appointment. Commerzbank manager Rüdiger Rass, who was originally earmarked for the position on the Board of Managing Directors, had decided, in agreement with the Board of Managing Directors and Supervisory Board, to no longer be available following discussions with the banking supervisory authority, as Commerzbank explained in June.

The Austrian Spalt was head of the major Viennese bank Erst Group Bank from 2020 to 2022. "He is characterized by the fact that he has successfully borne responsibility and gained valuable experience in difficult times and in various markets," said Jens Weidmann, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Commerzbank.
