CEMEX is supplying 7,000 cubic meters of ready-mix
concrete for the supporting structure of the Exzenterhaus
(Eccentric House) Bochum, an unusual 89-meter tall office
tower, built atop a WWII reinforced concrete air raid
bunker. The building, with approximately 5,000 square
meters of planned office space, stands on a central
island in the middle of a major avenue near the center of
the city of Bochum in western Germany.
Exzenterhaus Bochum is a hybrid structure consisting of the
original above-ground circular bunker, about 19 meters in
diameter and 20 meters tall, with a circular 15 story
high-rise tower affixed to the top of it. The tower
consists of three vertical blocks of five oval stories
each. The vertical centerline of each block protrudes
"eccentrically" from the central axis of the tower, and
their oval ground plans are arranged in an offset pattern
to each other.
CEMEX is meeting this unique structure's challenging
requirements. The need to reinforce the old bunker and
affix the office tower above it, as well as the eccentric
arrangement of the tower with its up to seven-meter high
walls, called for careful selection of ready-mix concrete
and precision pouring. The walls and ceilings required the
highest quality face concrete to which fine-grain limestone
chippings were added to gain strength, achieve good flow
properties, and produce a finer finish.
