Equities

The equity trading volume on the Spanish Stock Exchange in 2012 totalled €698.93 billion, down 24% from a year earlier. However the trading volume in December came in at €57.15 billion, up 35% from the previous month and down 3.7% year on year.

The number of trades in 2012 reached 40.6 million, down 11% on the figure for 2011. In December the number of trades was 2.1 million, down 6.3% on the previous month and down 24% from December 2011.

As for the ETF segment, the trading volume in 2012 totalled €2.69 billion, down 22.7% from 2011. In December the trading volume was €155 million, up 16.7% on the previous month and down 49% from December 2011.

The total number of trades in ETFs in 2012 reached 55,011, up 27% from 2011. The number of trades in December totaled 2,836, down 9.5% from the previous month and down 0.4% from December 2011.

Futures and options

In 2012 trading on BME's Derivatives Market came in at 67.17 million contracts, an almost identical figure to that for 2011.

It is worth mentioning the heavy trading recorded in the Options on stocks and Options on Indices, with respective trading volumes of 4.2 and 34.5 million contracts and increases of 91.7% and 17.3%, respectively.

In December trading came in at 7 million contracts, with heavy trading in Options on Indices, at 574,372 contracts, which is a monthly record high for 2012 and double the amount registered in December 2011.

Warrants and Certificates

The number of warrants admitted to trading in 2012 was 6,987. Activity on the market during the year reached €780.6 million, down 52% from 2011. In December, the trading volume came in at €44.8 million, down 10% on the previous month and down 51% year on year.

The number of trades in 2012 in this market was 202,714, down 33% from a year earlier. In December the number of trades was 12,019, down 12% from the previous month and down 36% year on year.

Corporate Debt

The trading volume on the Corporate Debt market in 2012 came in at €2.56 trillion, down 52.9% year on year, although the number of trades increased twofold (98,7%) to 1.28 million.

In December the trading volume came in at €219.59 billion, down 43% year on year. However the number of trades was 221,308, more than six times as high as the figure posted for the same month in 2011.

New issues in 2012 totalled €363.97 billion, up 30.7% from the same period a year earlier. In December new issues came in at €53.89 billion, up 23.3% year on year.

The outstanding balance at the end of 2012 was €880.17 billion, a similar figure to that recorded a year earlier (-0.25%).
