July 10 (Reuters) - German carmaker BMW is recalling more than 390,000 vehicles in the United States due to faulty airbag inflators that could potentially explode, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Wednesday.

An explosion of the inflator can result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other car occupants, potentially leading to injury or death, said the NHTSA.

The recall affects certain sedans and sportswagon vehicles. (Reporting by Disha Mishra and Ananta Agarwal in Bengaluru; Editing by Shounak Dasgupta and Shinjini Ganguli)
