Networked visualization solution helps to enhance response time to power outages with enhanced image accuracy and network data sharing

Duluth, Ga., USA - 24 January 2013 - Visualization pioneer Barco, in cooperation with premier AV systems integrator Vistacom, is providing its latest networked video wall solution to the Bermuda Electric Light Company (BELCO) to upgrade its power grid visualization capabilities.

As the sole electric utility for the island of Bermuda, BELCO is responsible for monitoring and managing electricity generation and delivery to 36,000 metered connections throughout a 21-square-mile area. The new Barco video wall displays a highly detailed, wide-area view of the island's power grid, providing real-time data and video on power usage and availability across numerous workstations in the Operations Center - an especially critical capability during hurricane season and other high-alert weather periods.

"One of the greatest benefits of the new video wall system is its information-sharing capability, which enables our managers, operators and customer service staff to simultaneously view real-time SCADA information throughout our computer network," comments Noel Martin, Operations Center Manager at BELCO.   "This, combined with the wall's excellent pixel and color accuracy, helps us to quickly assess and solve outages to restore power to our customers as soon as possible."

BELCO opted for Barco's OVL-815 80" LED-lit rear-projection modules configured in a 3 x 2 array with stitched screens, driven by the latest video wall processors.

"BELCO wanted the best when they approached us for assistance with their video wall upgrade," comments Jim Ferlino, President of Vistacom. "We've been a big fan of Barco for many years because of their excellent image quality, superior brightness and deep contrast, which are essential for accurately depicting the intricate SCADA diagrams and maps used by today's utilities. Built upon Barco's highly reliable LED technology, this solution will meet their needs in the most comprehensive, yet economical way for many years to come."

Some of the greatest benefits of the new video wall solution will be realized next year when BELCO completes the deployment of its new 18-camera Virtual LAN to monitor diesel power generating engines located throughout the central service area.  "Once we're able to simultaneously visualize all of the camera feeds on the video wall, we'll have a real-time, continuous view of our engine operations at every site," comments Martin. "This will vastly improve our first response capability by providing us with accurate visual data on what's happening out there so we can respond immediately and appropriately to issues. Again, the ability to share this graphic information across our network is essential to providing the highest level of service."

"We're pleased to offer BELCO a networked visualization solution that will grow with them as they expand their utility monitoring network. Many utilities are discovering the ability of Barco's video wall solutions to enhance information-sharing and improve response time and quality in their emergency operations. We fully intend to continue our investment in making ours the best collaborative visualization platform in the industry," comments Hans Dekeyser, VP Strategic Alliances, Control Rooms & Simulation for Barco.
