The Axel Springer Academy, Germany's most modern school of journalism, is launching an online magazine on the freedom of the press in Germany. Under the motto "Write it loud!" on the website ("20twelve"), 20 young journalists are examining the issue of media freedom in Germany in the year 2012. With the aid of numerous background reports, interviews and videos, they document how often attempts are made to influence independent reporting. They are also portraying people who champion the fundamental right of freedom of the press in Germany. The site is complemented by the "20zwoelfBlog", which will be established as a forum for debate on this topic.

While researching for the website, the young reporters from the Axel Springer Academy stumbled among other things, across secret pacts and documents which will now see the light of day for the first time. They discussed the importance of defending press freedom with BILD am SONNTAG reporter Marcus Hellwig in his first interview following his release from four months of captivity in an Iranian prison. The limits of the freedom of the press are also discussed on the website, for example in an exclusive debate between BILD editor-in-chief Kai Diekmann and the media lawyer Christian Schertz.

"Freedom of the press is one of our most valuable assets and is already almost taken for granted particularly by young people. At the same time, the recent events relating to Federal President Christian Wulff demonstrate how blatantly attempts are made to influence the media right up to the highest offices", says Academy Director Marc Thomas Spahl. "It is us journalists of all people who must draw attention to such abuses and bravely defend this fundamental right. In more or less the way it was also done by Axel Springer, whose 100th birthday we are celebrating this year." The young journalists from Team 10 have been working intensively on the website over the past few months and will continue to research and write for it.

The combines the advantages of a well-established School of Journalism with those of a classical internship. During their two-year vocational training, the young journalists learn their craft from scratch. The focus is on investigative research and cross-media work. The Academy, which is also the publisher's think tank, has received a number of awards for its innovative projects, including the and the CeBit AppStar.
