Uber Freight and Aurora Innovation have announced a multi-year partnership that will allow Aurora's autonomous driving technology to be offered on the Uber Freight network through 2030. Uber has moved its freight operations into a separate organization.

For now, Aurora will deploy a fleet of up to 20 trucks (manufactured by Paccar and Volvo).

A partnership already existed, with Aurora transporting goods on the Uber Freight network between Dallas and Houston. Incidentally, still with a driver.

Aurora access plans to launch its fully self-driving commercial service later this year. Eventually, carriers will be able to buy trucks with Aurora Driver technology on board.

Freight transportation in the U.S. has been hit hard by higher fuel costs and falling demand. Autonomous driving trucks could cut costs. Carriers are also facing personnel shortages.
