Ascom received a follow-up order from Swiss private clinic for psychiatry and psychotherapy, Sanatorium Kilchberg. The clinic equips its personnel with Ascom i62 Protector and Messenger versions.

For many years the Sanatorium Kilchberg in the Swiss town of the same name has relied on solutions from Ascom for its communications infrastructure. In the context of modernization, the clinic staff was provided with a contemporary WLAN-based telephone system. In the process, VoWiFi handsets supporting the IEEE-802.11 standards a, b, g and n are being used for the first time in Switzerland. They can therefore be implemented in the most varied networks and utilize the performance reserves of contemporary WLAN technology.

"The Ascom system has now been supporting and securing our clinic staff for over a year in their work routine", explains Stefan Hofmann, head of infrastructure for the Sanatorium.

People with psychological problems have a great need for human attention and modern therapies in a secure and attractive environment. Treatment oriented to the personal needs of patients and individual cares provided by professional clinic staff are decisive in this context.

"We want to make sure that the employees of the Sanatorium Kilchberg receive valuable workflow support but also in the form of secure and uninterrupted communication and the real value is to give our users a modern and reliable solutions which helps them to improve the care for the patients and optimize their critical processes." says Dennis Andersson, Vice President Global Sales at Ascom Wireless Solutions.

Even prior to the modernization, technology of the specialist for modular, networked clinic communications solutions were already being used in the private clinic. The eight year-old telePROTECT alarm paging system with infrared localization system was replaced in the past year with a WLAN-based solution. The new infrastructure was also delivered and installed ready for use by Ascom. 190 mobile devices of the type Ascom i62 Protector and 15 devices of the i62 Messenger variant are now being used as a personal emergency system in the form of receiving units and alarm devices. The related Ascom alarm and messaging middleware Unite was designed to be redundant for extra security.

Problem-free integration into the most varied networks

All devices of the series i62 can be easily integrated into the most varied network topologies. The Ascom i62 is the first VoWiFi handset that is compatible with all IEEE-802.11-a/b/g/n networks. With complete support of the standard IEEE-802.11 n, the system offers higher throughput and improved range, without having a negative impact on network capacities. Updates can also be installed via wireless fidelity. The device configurations are saved centrally, which simplifies replacement of the device and usage by several persons.

The robust i62 devices are ideally suited to clinic routine. They correspond to protection class IP44, are tolerant against splashing water and can be disinfected with alcohol. The model Ascom i62 Protector is also equipped with an intelligent alarm function. When the alarm button is pressed, a corresponding notification appears on the display of every user in the clinic. They can see at a glance who triggered the alarm at what time, and where he/she is located at the moment.

Meaningful alarms through permanent localization

The new localization system Ekahau is based on a standard 802.11 WLAN and RFID tags. At configurable intervals, the i62 scans the environment for access points and sends their device ID and field strength to the Ekahau positioning engine. This uses these to continuously determine the exact location of each user.
