Water Policy

At Antofagasta Minerals, we develop mining for a better future, believing that our activities contribute to our local communities, the country, and the world. We acknowledge that water is a strategic resource for our Group and that it is essential for life on our planet, having an impact in sociocultural, environmental, and economic levels.

Water stewardship is essential in copper mining. In order to safeguard the availability of water resources for our operations, the communities and the environment, we implement practices aligned with the Water Stewardship Framework of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM).

Responding to these objectives, Antofagasta Minerals commits to:

Increase water efficiency in our operations

We are committed to progressively reducing water use per tonne of copper produced.

We seek multiple alternative sources of water supply in order to be efficient operators of this resource.

We pursue innovative technological solutions that improve water efficiency and continuously promote increased recirculation (efficient reuse and recycling).

We look for opportunities to reduce our water operating costs and be efficient stewards of water resources in the basins where we operate.

We set water objectives and targets and report on their progress.

Apply robust, transparent Water Governance

We publicly share our approach regarding water stewardship and report on such management's performance, risks, opportunities and on the results achieved, using consistent industry metrics and widely accepted approaches.

We have clearly established roles and responsibilities at all levels of the Group regarding water stewardship

We include water resource criteria into the mining group's strategy, business planning and asset lifespan.

Cooperate for environmentally responsible, sustainable water management

We work to meet our environmental commitments in water resources, in accordance with applicable law and international standards.

We manage water-related risks and opportunities at the basin level.

We work with local communities to cooperate in the management of their water needs, contributing to improve water security.

We maintain open, transparent communication with stakeholders.
