We are excited to announce that Amcor has committed to science-based targets, which will provide a clear path to achieving net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. The commitment ensures we are doing what is necessary to meet the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting global warming.

As part of this commitment, Amcor will look to make the most of new opportunities brought about by renewable energy and efficiency savings to reduce GHG emissions. This will allow us to further reduce our impact on the planet while delivering the more sustainable packaging our customers and their consumers want and need, and generating value for shareholders and investors.

The net zero target is in line with our broader sustainability strategy and builds on our existing EnviroAction program. Since the program started in 2008, Amcor has already reduced GHG emissions intensity by 35% and is on track to deliver a cumulative 60% reduction by 2030.

In addition to reducing GHG emissions, for more than a decade our EnviroAction program has seen us reduce our wider impact on the environment. Key achievements include:

  • Waste-to-disposal: last year we recycled 76% of the waste we produced. We have also achieved a 7% reduction in waste-to-disposal compared to our FY19 EnviroAction period baseline, with 115 Amcor sites now sending zero waste-to-disposal.
  • Water: we have achieved a 35% reduction in water withdrawal compared to our baseline of 2006.

The announcement also comes on the fourth anniversary of our pledge, where we committed to designing all our packaging to be recycled or reusable by 2025. Currently three-quarters (74%) of our products by weight are now designed to be fully recyclable.

Our focus is now on innovating products which have traditionally been considered difficult to recycle such as flexible packaging - and have achieved success. Our AmPrima™ recycle ready solutions offer customers a more sustainable choice for their flexible packaging needs with no compromise on performance.

As part of this work to make packaging more sustainable and drive up recycling rates, we have also been a leader in Project Barrier. This initiative involves the development of a global design-for-recyclability standard for high-barrier flexible packaging and includes our new more recyclable innovations AmPrima, AmLite Heatflex, and AmSky™ thermoform blister system.

While such innovations are helping us on our way to ensuring that all our packaging designs are fully recyclable or reusable by 2025, we are also working hard to increase the amount of recycled content we use. In the last year have seen a 30% increase in the purchase of recycled content compared to the previous year - and an 86% increase since 2019.

Our pledge to achieve net zero through science-based targets, in addition to our existing efforts on water use, waste-to-disposal and recyclable packaging, mean that we will continue to be a global leader in responsible packaging. We are proud to be the partner of choice for many brands that share our commitment and passion for delivering more sustainable and less GHG intense packaging solutions.
