BOLOGNA AIRPORT: EIGHT MILLION AND A HALF PASSENGERS IN 2018 (+3.8%)

London, Paris and Catania the most popular destinations

Strong growth in December, with about 650 thousand passengers (+7.8%)

Bologna Airport ended 2018 with a new passenger traffic record: for the first time in its history over eight million and a half passengers (8,506,658*) travelled through the airport, with an increase of 3.8% on 2017, driven both by international passengers (6,524,197, a 4.4% increase) and domestic passengers (1,975,283 +1.8%).

2018 was the tenth consecutive year of passenger traffic growth for Bologna Airport, showing a solid and continuous development along time.

Sunday 19th August was the busiest day ever with 32,195 arriving and departing passengers.

Flight movements (71.503*) went substantially unchanged (-0.2%) and air cargo traffic recorded a decrease of 3.3% on 2017, totaling 40,474 tons.

Last year's excellent performance was mainly due to the start of a wide range of scheduled flights both in the Summer and in the Winter seasons: Amman (Ryanair), Athens (Aegean), Kaunas (Ryanair), Kiev (Ernest), London Luton (Ryanair), Mykonos (Ryanair), Tiblisi (Georgian) and Vienna (LaudaMotion). The positive trend was also confirmed by the strengthening of some already existing connections to Amsterdam, Barcelona, Catania, Frankfurt and Moscow.

As regards the most popular destinations in 2018, London reached the top of the ranking, with over 620 thousand passengers considering the four airports Gatwick, Heathrow, Luton and Stansted, Paris ranked second, with over 400 thousand passengers (Charles De Gaulle and Beauvais) and Catania ranked third (396 thousand passengers). The other "Top Ten" destinations were: Barcelona, Frankfurt, Rome Fiumicino, Palermo, Madrid, Amsterdam and Munich.

December registered a sound growth as regards passenger traffic, delivering an increase of 7.8%, with 646,982* passengers. Flight movements performed well, too, rising by 5.6% (5,521*), while air cargo decreased by 5.9% (3,213 tons).

Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport, classified as a "strategic airport" in the centre-north area of the National Airports Plan prepared by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, is now the eighth biggest Italian airport by passenger numbers, with more than 8.2 million passengers in 2017, of which 76% on international flights (Source: Assaeroporti). As for airport infrastructure, the airport has among its strategic objectives in the next few years an important development plan that mainly concerns the expansion of the terminal, particularly in the parts of security checks and gate area.
