The preliminary TYNDP 2021-2030, with a total budget of Euro 4.4 billion, among others, comprises the completion of electricity interconnections in Crete and the Cyclades, the upgrade of the Ionian Islands Transmission Grid, the completion of the upgrade of the 400kV System in the Peloponnese, the enhancement of the 400kV System in the region of East Macedonia and Thrace and the expansion of international interconnections.

International Interconnections: The new TYNDP outlines the construction of the second interconnection line linking the Greek and Bulgarian Transmission Systems. The new 400 kV interconnection is a major pan-European project and is expected to be integrated into the European System at the beginning of 2023. In addition, the development of new interconnections and the upgrade of the existing ones with the neighboring Systems of Northern Macedonia and Turkey are also under examination. To this end, relevant feasibility studies will be carried out in the near future, to support the selection of projects that have to be included in the Ten-Year Development Plan of ENTSO-E and the respective National Development Programs.

RES Integration: Following the successful implementation of the new TYNDP, the upgraded Electricity Transmission System, combined with the transition of power production mix and the integration of new storage systems, promises to meet the needs of the new targets set by the National Energy and Climate Plan of 2030.

The new TYNDP has significant environmental benefits and sets the conditions for higher integration of RES in power generation, according to the targets set by the national energy strategic plan. At the same time, the Operator monitors closely the energy developments in the SEE region and, in co-operation with ETSO-E, conducts new plans for further electricity interconnections with the focus on increasing its contribution to the integration of the single European electricity market. As far as the implementation of the investment plan is concerned, IPTO SA proceeds its projects without delays through optimal usage of its resources, in order to further accelerate electricity interconnections.
