Understanding Our Biases: An Interactive Workshop for Residents

The Lower Merion Township Board of Commissioners will host a public session on January 30th, 2019 that is designed as an interactive program to focus on an important subject for our society: Understanding and Challenging our Implicit and Explicit Biases.

The session will be facilitated by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which held intensive half-day programs for many Lower Merion Township employees in December. The January 30th program is designed as a public session, with Township residents and Commissioners attending. This unique session, due to its interactive nature, can only accommodate 80 participants, so those wishing to attend need to pre-register.

A big part of the ADL's mission is to provide community members with the knowledge and tools to challenge all forms of prejudice, and actively promote inclusive communities, schools and workplaces in which individual differences are respected and valued. Its workshops provide community members with resources and strategies to recognize and address issues of explicit and implicit bias, prejudice and discrimination. Through facilitated discussions, dynamic anti-bias education activities, and integrated multimedia, ADL workshops seek to identify racial, religious, socio-economic, cultural and other human differences in the community, as well as participants' responses to those differences. Together, participants can develop strategies that advance inclusion, equity, and respect for human differences as core values of the community.

The session will be held January 30th, 2019, starting promptly at 7 p.m. in the Board Room at the Township Administration Building (75 E. Lancaster Avenue, Ardmore).
