WASHINGTON, Jan 29 (Reuters) - The U.S. will reinstate sanctions on Venezuela's oil sector if the Venezuelan government does not lift its ban on a leading opposition candidate running for president later this year, a White House official said on Monday.

The Biden administration will allow a six-month suspension of energy-related sanctions to expire in April if Maria Corina Machado and other opposition figures are not allowed to compete against President Nicolas Maduro, the official said on condition of anonymity. (Reporting By Matt Spetalnick)
