Trident Gallery, a showcase for the art of Cape Ann, Massachusetts, announces Winter Meditations, an exhibition of visual art and a coordinated series of performances evolving with the season from mid-winter into spring, January 17 -March 16, 2014.

"Winter Meditations will proceed through four phases, each exploring a different facet of the manifold resonances, implications, and local realities of the season of winter: Stillness, Observation, Longing, and Persephone's Return," said Trident Gallery Director Dr. Matthew Swift.

"Stillness," evoking the contemplative isolation of winter, opens January 17, and features the premiere at 7:30pm of Then it seemed beautiful, a dance performance directed by choreographer Sarah Slifer Swift, to the music of Morton Feldman's Three Voices and words by Frank O'Hara. Works of art by Gabrielle Barzaghi, Susan Emory, Dennis Flavin and others will be on display.

From January 24 through March 2, Trident Gallery is proud to host a loan from the Massachusetts Audubon Society Museum of American Bird Art of more than 30 prints and paintings of bird species present on Cape Ann in winter by artists John James Audubon, Milton Avery, Andy Warhol and others. The exhibit is an extension of the annual Cape Ann Winter Birding Weekend (January 31 - February 2, 2014). A public reception entitled "Arctic Life" will be held on January 25, 5-7pm, to celebrate winter wildlife and the winter bird art, and to meet Museum staff and Gallery artists.

The Audubon exhibit begins phase two, "Observation," which honors the skill and habit of close observation of life shared alike by artists and naturalists. On January 31, 1-3pm, artist Sandy McDermott presents a workshop on the close observation and field sketching of birds and other wildlife.

Among others, special events include:

  • February 8: Poet and Guggenheim Fellow Brendan Galvin
  • March 1: Renowned Naturalist Chris Leahy
